FREE Golf LAUNCH MONITOR app for iPhone! Too good to be true?

In this video Rick Shiels PGA Golf Professional reviews the Shotvision golf launch monitor app on his iPhone!

With the growing trend in golfers wanting to use a launch monitor it’s super exciting that you can now download an app onto your iPhone to track your golf ball! But is it good?

Rick downloads the app onto his iPhone 11 Pro but it will also work (obviously) on the brand new iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini!

  1. "I don't know if it is close enough". Close enough for what/who? I think your missing your audience a bit, here. For many of us, we don't have thousands and thousands of dollars to spend on a machine of that caliber. A $7/month app that gets that close is good enough to get some idea on the metrics.

With that being said, love the videos. I would love to see a whole play list dedicated to technology and golf. Launch monitors, ball tracking, home golf simulating, etc.

  2. If the phone had some extra ram and actual red or green laser sensor it would be flawless. Hopefully they can modulate that for multiple uses one day and make a standard addition to phones.

  3. The programming generation. Someone wrote that software and put it in a waterproof box and said its worth 20k. A 20 year old writes a similar program a couple years later in his basement for a cell phone ios and sells it to google for 1/50 the cost. Future lore.

  4. You mentioned the camera is what captures all of the data. I would like to point out that not all camera's are capable of capturing the same. In the event you have a phone such as the Samsung galaxy S20 (Android) which currently among the top best camera's for phones currently available… how big of a difference would there be? Thank you for the quality content! Simply inspiring!!

  5. Ball tracking physics is easy with good camera with just a few frames. I’m not surprised it works for front facing, apple has good 3D cam sensor for face unlock cool stuff glad someone finally wrote this app

  6. Hi Rick. Good vid once again although I must question your method of comparison between the two devices. Basically the reason why the test method was ethically and scientifically unsound was that you based the entire comparison on the premise that the GCQuad was infallible .
What is to say that the phone app is far more accurate than the quad and the only difference in the numbers was due to the Quad’s inaccuracy. Ideally a video show exactly how accurate the Quad is would be interesting. As the ball speed and club speed seemed yeah close, only the carry had any difference. Have you ever physically measured your real carry distance on a range and compared that to the Quad? Just a thought, not a criticism

  7. I’ve used this app a few times and working out the kinks. The shots that do not read are being hit out side of the camera line which a good indication that your swing path and strike are off. So it will make you focus on sending the ball on line. I used the app and then went to the SkyTrack bays at my driving range and the numbers where pretty close.

  8. There are several variables you ae playing with here that effect any analysis. First is the hardware. Not sure what model of phone you are using, but I would think the processing power and other camera capabilities have an impact. Also your reliable monitor will also have a margin of error. Not sure what that is but like all devices like this it has a degree of error.

  9. Seven years already went by when I started playing and all those years were brimming with practices and lessons. When I obtained the golf swing techniques , Jοmtοnο Naha (Go ogle it), I was able to create a 75 shot after a couple of buckets. I was able to get more acquainted with many golf concepts such as grip, ball position and through swing drills. My past handicap is thirteen, but now I`m beginning to lower it. It is remarkable tutorial!.

  10. Testing data should have also been considered on an overcast day to be fair. The glare from the sun and you throwing the ball on the GC quad's shadow was like beating a red headed stepchild because she is a stepchild and has red hair.

  11. How about the accuracy on the shorter stuff for yardage? Yeah everyone wants to see the biggest number they can with the driver, but would this be fairly accurate for getting a good sense of your iron gaps on the range for your average golfer? Does it get more accurate with slower ball speed shots I wonder? Could be a great tool for people that don't want to drop a few hundred on one of the other launch monitors and only play 15 rounds a year, but are interested in gaining some knowledge of their distances while hitting a bucket at the range. Great video as always though!

  12. I'm really glad you did this review. While that product might be the greatest right now, it does say a lot about where things are headed. Unless money is literally of no concern what so ever I would certainly not spend mine on any high end dedicated launch monitor. Chances are they will be obsolete within a few years, maybe sooner.
