Material Design of iPhone 12: Return to Form

iPhone 12 draws a straight line to the design of a decade ago with the iPhone 4, and perhaps indicates a common design language throughout several Apple devices, including iPad and Display XDR. I’m excited about it.

  1. Have you bought the iPhone 12?

I had iPhone XR for 2 years. This year, when I saw the 12, was going to buy it. 256gb regular 12 was going to be $1600 in australia.. so, I decided to save some money and get a superior phone in some ways – 512gb 11 pro max for just $1150. Really like it.

Although, I would have preferred the 12.. ideally 12 pro, I’m happy with the 11 pro Max. In fact, I got a regular 11 pro just to test it out. And it’s great too. But I love the bigger much more immersive screen.

  2. I could not agree more. The visual appeal, and functional ergonomics of the 4 & 5 are absolutely the best iterations of the iPhone/Apple. It created an emotional feeling of value and branding identity, with a fantastically unique design language, I am happy it has returned to differentiate them from the "me too" pebble look. With our "masked world" I would like to see the finger print button return, in addition to the facial recognition. I believe there are scenarios where both are required: Canadian winters with gloves, or glove sports, facial recognition is beneficial. Mask wearing, drops on the rear glass, the fingerprint gets the nod. Keep up the great information!

  3. I worked electronics at Walmart at the time, and the 4 was the first iPhone I wanted. I didn’t switch until the 7, but I thought the 4 was the most beautiful device ever created. That’s why I was so excited for this Pro. The 4 still has it beat slightly, but the 12 Pro Max I have is my favorite design I’ve ever owned.

  4. My first iPhone was the 4 when Verizon got it. It was absolutely stunning and a marvel to possess. I’m really excited for the 12 Pro series and I’m definitely primed and ready to preorder 12 Pro Max Friday morning. Will even grab Apple Leather case so I can feel those square sides and edges.

  5. The last three phones that I had was the bigger iPhones. But I just bought the iPhone 12 pro and I love the size of it. I miss having a phone that I could just put in my pocket and not have to worry about or may I say it getting in the way of my comfort as far as sitting or just having such a big device. I enjoy the size of this phone and it’s nice to be able to operate it with one hand again 🙂

  6. When the first iphone 5 came out as Steve's last design, I loved and essentially worshipped so much to the fact that I kept until the first SE came out. Since then I never bought a new iphone until 12 pro came out few days ago which I instantly preordered because not only they finally returned to the form factor, they seemed to gradually taking customers' feedback more seriously since iphone X came out. I do get that apple is all about precision and perfection which I completely adore, but at the same time I wished they put touch ID at least at the side power bar if they were that worried with unrefined onscreen fingerprint. Face ID is still a massive no to me.

  7. Wow, I also downgraded to SE when they came out for my secondary phone numbers because I liked the squared off edges of my older iPhones. It was a bit of nostalgia for me and the 6 was just ugly to me, let’s face it. 😂 The SE’s are a bit too small, however, so I’m looking forward to my 12 pro when it arrives.

  8. In the reviews I have seen so far, many talk of the stuff 'inside,' and few talk about the 'outside,' but say that it’s a step back.

Isn't it more like if something is "great by design, it will continue to remain great."

    or
    Did I misunderstand this?

Thanks for posting this point of view on design.

  9. Chris you mentioned that you’d like to see this type of industrial design language across the board for all Apple products. Do you like the idea of a squared off sharp-edged Apple Watch casing? Also, how much can this design shift for iPhone 12 be attributed to the cyclical nature of design? Do you think that six years from now iPhones will be curvy again?

  10. I think looking at when the ipad pro was released i was kinda expecting the next iphone to be a similar delign. im with you Chris, i think the iphone 4 style was the best. Was a second away from ordering the iphone 12 pro but now im having more of a think about it. its a little bigger than the 11 pro but i personally think its too large. will probably want to see them in person before i decide.
another great video Chris, love your Hermes apple watch videos too.

  11. When I think Apple, I think of the 4/5 design. First iPhone that I had and I got it specifically because of the design. I've been patiently waiting for them to go back to this. I absolutely love the edges. For some reason, the edges seem more premium to me. Man, I'm excited.

  12. I have the 7. Agree the design of the 12 is better in the square form but I don’t see enough to make me want to upgrade. Maybe I just need to touch and feel it but there’s something missing for me. Just don’t know what that is….

  13. I started with the 5S, then SE. Both reminded me of my Leica M7 cameras. My SE is now my iPod, and have had the XR for almost two years.

The XR is a slippery bugger, so I keep it in a Defender case. If I upgrade to a 12, most likely, it will be in a case, but I would have to remove it from the case, just to marvel at the design and feel, like I did with my old Leica's.

  14. I’ll be getting the 12 Pro. Love the design and it a perfect size I think. White colour for me I think. I always get white and as. At least I’m consistent 😆

  15. I have my very first iphone in iPhone 4, ever since i have 6 plus and now using xr. I love the flat design of iphone 4 but the xr is still doing great for me so I’m sticking to it. I really hope apple will stick with this flat edges for the foreseeable future for when i decide to upgrade

  16. I have the XS and I think I’ll upgrade purely for the design. I’m thinking about the Pro Max. Let us know what you get if you do get something.

    Great video as always!!

  17. The iPad being curved had a function. It’s a device too big to pick up with one hand if it doesn’t slightly lift off the surface. iPhones being smaller don’t have that problem. I think applying the same design to all products isn’t the way to go, since different products have different purposes with different requirements. 2012ish apple had the best design throughout the entire product lineup imo because every product was unique but kept a similar design language up

  18. I would be really interested in what you could say about midnight green… You said apple learned rom MG and made pacific blue, was there a problem with MG to begin with? Looking forward to your answer; great video btw 🙂

  19. 100% agree with you! (again). This design form was by far my favorite. I think they lost this because of the new displays. This is the best design.

The rounded ones were slippery and really ugly, cheap looking.

  20. Haha, the design of the iPhone 4/4s has always been my favorite 🥰. I wish they would bring back the exact same design and the same sized body, just with thinner bezels – that would be a dream come true 😍.

  21. Very great talking points! Apple’s refinement of a popular series in the 4 (and 5) is a good direction. I’m excited for the 12 Pro Max in terms of photo/videography. However, pocket ability still reigns king in my decision so the 12 Pro will be my choice. That gold version looks 🔥.
