Audio Recording with an iPhone Using the Tascam iM2 Mic

Our show mainly focuses on the video and filmmaking aspects of the iPhone, but we get lots of questions about recording audio… So, we’re demoing the Tascam iM2 mic and it’s accompanying PCM Recorder App (which is free).

The mic itself is about $80 USD, but you can get it now with an “Instant Savings” from B&H for about $30 – great deal.

  1. Hi,  Thanks for the vid.  Wonder if anyone can help me?  I make a recording, remove the mic press play and hear nothing, ever,  even though the display indicates a healthy audio signal.  Anyone?  Driving me nuts

  2. Is there a way to have a remote control to put the TASCAM into record so that your finger does not have to actually touch the screen.  It would be nice to be able to remotely stop and start recordings.  Any help is appreciated.

  3. edit. I just tried it on my iPad2 with latest ios and you can't monitor audio being recorded, and you do have to remove mic before being able to playback. So it must just be an iPhone 5 (&ipad3?) & adapter advantage then.

  4. I confirm the genuine Apple adapter works great. Get the 20cm corded version though, then when you shoot video holding the phone in ladscape, it allows you to correctly orientate the mic for stereo (otherwise the mic would be up/down) Also, you CAN monitor the audio when recording, and you do not have to unplug the mic to replay a recording with the iphone 5 (or maybe it's just the new ios that allows this)

  5. This would be a great tool for voice actors. As long as you have this mic and a car or closet nearby you can always record your projects or bids for VoiceOver work sites.
