How to Connect a USB Audio Interface to an iPad or iPhone

How to connect a USB audio interface to an iPad/iPhone

If you want to record the highest quality audio possible with GarageBand on your iPhone or iPad you’ll want to look into using a ‘proper’ audio interface. Which audio interface is right for you is a conversation for another day, but whatever model you go for, attaching it to your iDevice isn’t going to be as straightforward as you might like.

Wether you’re rocking a lightning based iPhone or iPad, or a USB C equipped iPad…

  1. I'm mostly set, but what kind of track do I create? I have a project with a play along track in it to start. When I create an "external" track I see the message about the audio interface but it shows me the metronome program? What am I missing?

  2. If your still having issue like I was, try this…
Connect USB lightning adapter to iPad
Connect interface to a powered USB hub
Connect output of USB hub to Lightning adapter
And finally, connect lightning cable to both USB hub and Lightning adapter.

  3. Do I have to use headphones to hear my guitar? I used to be able to hear my audio through the iPad speakers but on the newer (2018) iPad Pro I can’t hear anything unless I use headphones. I want to hear my guitar through the iPad speakers. By the way I’m using a third generation Focusrite Scarlett Solo. Thanks in advance!

  4. please help
Originally I bought my Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3 thinking I could plug my guitar in and it would let me use Garageband on my iPad like an amp; so far, seems like I’d need headphones to do that. My question is though, is there a way to hear anything out of my iPad’s speakers with this plugged in? On my much older Macbook, I can set the audio output to the speakers so I can at least hear the recordings I just made, but I can’t seem to do this on my pretty new iPad pro and short of buy new headphones to plug into the Focusrite, it seems like my 2013 macbook is superior to my 2019 iPad pro when using the Focusrite SS3 which can’t be right, can it? Am I just doing something wrong

  5. I am trying to use a computer monitor with VGA and HDMI inputs as a secondary display for my iPad 7. I have a lightning HDMI/USB 3 adapter that I connect my Apogee Duet interface to, and the HDMI to the computer monitor (with Screen Mirroring). But the problem is that I get no audio through my interface or iPad’s headphone jack with this set up. I’m guessing the VGA option might work but can’t find a lightning adapter with USB 3 and VGA ports. Any idea if such an adapter exists or another possible way to use my monitor as a 2nd display but also getting audio from my interface?

  6. how can i hook up my Rode Caster Proto my iPhone 12 pro max lightning input? I even tried to go direct from my Rode Wireless go into apple oem lightning to 1/8 inch feal and I can only get the internal iPhone mic to pick up sound.

  7. how do you use a 3x rca (red white yellow) to 3.5mm audio jack. i am using an SSL 2+ audio interface and a iphone 6. i want to send audio from pc to mono input on mic in on iphone 6. possible ? without the lightening connector ?

  8. The camera connector kit that I’ve got only has a USB port and not a spot for a lightning cable as well. I’ve got everything else, is it possible to connect or do I need to purchase the connector with the additional lightning port?
