I’m so tired of people arguing about “gif” vs “jif”. Neither of those are always, objectively right.
“Gif” is used when it is the first word or all words preceding it are articles, verbs, or adverbs attached to it, as long as it’s being used as a noun. For example, you would say “that purple gif isn’t here”
Because of the formatting issues, I can’t imagine a scenario where it would be the first word or entirely preceded by modifying words and be a noun, yet also not be the subject. However, subject/predicate is irrelevant to this rule.
“Jif” is used for when it’s not the first word in the sentence, or some word before it in the sentence doesn’t modify it. For example, you would say “Hey, did you get the jif I sent you?”, or when seeing a potential gif in a movie, you would say “I’ve got to gif that” because in that case gif is a verb.
Even if it’s being used as a verb at the begining of a sentence, it would still be pronounced with a J sound. For example, you might instruct your tech-savvy friend to “jif that!” When you see the movie clip I mentioned before.
It’s important to remember that I only typed ‘jif’ for explaining the pronunciation. Other than for that explicit purpose, it should always be written capital G, capital I, capital F.
