  1. Update: I have tested the LiDAR sensor with the normal Portrait Mode, and can confirm that it does not affect the accuracy of depth in that mode. Apple could in theory push an update that will make the cameras take advantage of LiDAR more often, but as of right now, it unfortunately does not. The only time the LiDAR sensor is used in the camera app is for Portrait Mode photos when used in combination with Night Mode.

  2. After years of not having a smart phone (never truly needed one), I was in a position that I needed to get one and I almost didn't get the 12 Pro (mostly budget reasons), but I'm now glad that I did, I didn't realize it had so many new things compared to the last two releases and even just the standard 12 model. I've been having fun with an app that is still kind of beta-but-purchasable on the app store that uses the LiDAR to almost "see in the dark". It still has some work that needs to be done to make it really good, but it generates images in a way that you can see rough outlines of objects so you can avoid them in the dark. You can't see details, but you really don't need details in the dark anyway, just need to be able to avoid that rock or tree right in front of you 😀

  3. They are integrating Lidar into cellphones so we can map earth. Plane Lidar can only cover direct lines of flight. Give everyone lidar on a cell phone and you could go pick up weed from somehow who grows and now their entire operation is compromised. Think about it.

  4. You realize most of the utility for the lidar sensor is not for the consumer right? It’s for environmental mapping and it works when its in your pocket, and companies/governments are using it to create realtime 3d vector maps of the entire world.

  5. I bought the new I phone 12 pro Max only to find out that this lidar thing totally sucks. The software is not able to connect the messured seizures from different angles- it destroys the old information without working with it. So the longer you try to scan an object, the more Information seems to be wasted because it seems only the last moments were used. The phone gets hot very fast. What is really annoyin to me is that the lidar sensor above your screen is much much better than the lidar sensor on the other side of your phone which you ll need the most if you wanne use it as a kind of night vision. I bought it because of that. It doesnt work. When its dark you can see something but its flickering and wont make anyone happy on that planet. Cant even go through my flat without running into things when the light is off. I purchased all existing Lidar 3D scanner APP etc….and it all just sucks really hard. Cant recommend anyone this I phone. Nor Apple. A friend of mine has a cheap non Apple phone- NV-Lidar worked great. But Apple is not able to provide this cheap standard but they are charging 5x the price. In 2021 a big name wont be a good excuse for selling Crap anymore. Im out Apple.

  6. I have the update for my 12 Pro Max but am confused about Apple Raw.. I think I have all the options correctly set but my images always come out as jpg at 1.5 Mb instead of raw at 25 Mb. They are labeled with the raw label, but inspecting them without editing them does not result in a large file.

  7. My favorite app for my 12 Pro is the 3d scanner app. You can measure a whole room, or just scan it and create a 3d image of a room or object.
