iPhone 12 vs Ricoh GR III for Street Photography – Which One Should You Pick?

Today I am going to challenge the Ricoh GR III which is I think the king of street photography with the newest iPhone 12. I want to take a look at if the new iPhone will be able to replace at least to a certain degree your camera and if it still makes sense to buy a compact camera if the street photography is the main genre you want to use it for.

  1. first of all: Thanks, this was the video comparison I had been waiting for, but I have to say I think you didn't really compare them on their own terms. I was also hoping for some usability comparison with actual street photography real life experience. IF you are ever comparing them again I think you should consider comparint raw to raw both editing on a computer and straight on the camera. Both can do that. You can take the iphone serious and see how far raw and creativity can go….. Same way, consider that ricoh has the most amazing preset for jPEGS and can be used for instant share on media with little effort and amazing colors. Can the iphone with all editing possibilities get close to positive film? Sorry to be harsh, but I totally see your point but thought this has more potential.. Thanks a lot for the comparison!

  2. The GR is perfectly suited for real street photography. The subtle looks, wide focal length, silent operation and snap focus get me awesome candid street shots which for me, are harder to get with a smartphone.

  3. when you take a pict in portrait mode in smartphone, you will notice how bad it is.expecially if you are not using hat or something to cover your hair.. uchh.. 😂😂😂

  4. I have also the GRIII and the iPhone 12 Pro. I have to say that I do not like so much the aggressive processing done on the iPhone. You get much more clean image on GRIII but if you want the same good HDR as on iPhone you need to shoot raw and do the post-processing, and that takes always a bit of effort. Whenever I go out on trip or street knowing that I will take photos, I take the GRIII, but for those moments where you need to take unplanned photos, iPhone 12 is the best you can have always with you. I am looking forward to see what the ApplePro RAW brings, but after all the size of the sensor here really matters, and a phone will never be able to compete with an ASP-C or Full frame sensor. It is all about physics.

  5. Enjoyed the candid comments. Well Done Video! I see the benefits of each. I struggle with what to use for shooting these days as I don't really make big prints anymore, most images are viewed on either phone or ipad. As you said, the differences become less under those viewing conditions.

  6. Thanks for the content! How come when I download my videos on YouTube on my iPhone 11 (4K: 24) does the quality seem so bad? Am I not on the right setting?

  7. The only thing I wish Ricoh GR would have is beautiful bokeh that you see on full frame cameras. I don't care if it's made thru software, but it would be great to have it apart from the natural bokeh it can make.

  8. Thanks.

    #GRIII, #GR3

Do you think street photographers would be OK if #Ricoh #Pentax add a new member in the GR line of advanced compact camera with the following specs…
(I know the camera would lose its compactness for flexibility like below )

    – Lens : A variable/zoom focal length lens like the G1X III. But fast while maintaining the compact size: f2.8-f4 / 24-72mm?
    – Screen : A tilting one like in the Fuji X100V or Fuji XPro3 (Street photographers' preference)- or – a fully articulated screen like in G1X III (Videographers preference)
    – EFV : G1 X III style or X100V/XPro3 style
    – Built-in flash + headphones/Mic Jacks

    or
    (1) more wide 18/20-50mm f/2.8-4 with a fully articulated screen that could please vloggers + headphone+Mic jacks + more video oriented or specs… Vloggers don't really need EVF
    (2) more telephoto 24-70/72/75/85mm f/2.8-4 with a tilting screen that could please street photographers… Photographers need EFV… (My eye is one my OVF all the time, most of the time except when I am on a tripod shooting landscape)

    What do you think?

  9. This type of video came out for the iphone 10, 11, 12 and will come out for the 13, 14, 15 and 16. These iphones are 1000 dollars and they come out every year! If you have a iphone 11 throw it in the trash!

  10. Shooting with a phone always feels weird to me. But its fine for reasonable prints. I prefer the Olympus Pen-F or Fuji cameras personally Always wanted to try the Ricoh though.

  11. You mention an app that offers a highlight metering mode on the iPhone, which is a feature i love on my GR. Would you tell us the name of that app? Thanks in advance!

  12. For me, street photography is not about technical quality, and candid mode is vital, so my preferred street camera would be my phone… But my preferred focal lengths are 50 and 85 mm.
If I could find an affordable Android phone, with longer focal length, optical stabilisation, water resistance, wireless charging, I would switch to it. Street only, of course. My pro kit is full frame.

  13. Great views of Prague and helpful comparison. You might have mentioned how visible was the Ricoh screen in sun compared to iPhone. Lack of viewfinder on some cameras can make composing difficult.

  14. I use a Huawei phone that allows taking a Raw file for all the lenses (80MB – the file size for the main camera) It is very nice but the real cameras are on another level, try the mate20pro because the latest Huawei phones that carry the RGB sensor, the new ones carry another RYYB architecture.

  15. These comparisons are silly the I phone sensor quality is not going to be close to the Ricoh no matter what claims they say with the much bigger sensor. Now if you don’t care about higher quality photos and it’s all about convenience then the choice is clear. I hate and dread using my iPhone for photography.
