They both land differently so there might be different outcomes. You should be dropping them at the exact same angle.

The Face ID sensor can be jacked up from impact since it requires precision point-tracking. If it's knocked out of alignment then you'll probably lose the functionality.

Apple made it that way…. When you drop it intentionally, phone remains perfectly fine.
If dropped accidentally…..phone explodes.
