Sony Xperia 5 II – Good Enough to Beat the Pixel 5 & iPhone 12 Series?

The Xperia 1 II is my phone of the year so far but the compact Xperias are amazing devices. So much power and performance without the usual sacrifices for a smaller phone. In this video I look at the specs of the Xperia 5 II (just revealed) and compare them against the anticipated specs of the Pixel 5 and iPhone 12 Series.

Have Sony nailed the pricing? Will they be able to claw back more market share? and if it was your money on the line, would you go for the Xperia 5 II or the iPhone…

  1. Damn it. I have 0 idea if I should aim for this phone instead of Xperia 5. Xperia 5 is currently 500euros in my country and my budget still isn't there so I hope it goes down. Now with this new Xperia 5II, it's obviously a better phone, but waiting for that price to drop could mean another year and I really need a change from my 4 year old Z5.
I don't care about wireless or 4k screen at the moment, I just adore the new 5II design. It has a jack, front stereo and fingerscanner/power button united which is a BIG plus compared to last years Xperia 5.
Oh and I would ALWAYS choose a Sony. Be it a phone, TV, console, headphones… I have faith everything will last. My mother's early Apple phones also seem to last but they've always been limited in a way

  2. Screen resolution drop is not an issue for me but Wireless charging is a bealbreaker for sure. My current phone has it, few previous ones had it. There're couple of wireless chargers at my home, one at work so I'd prefer to have it rather than not for this price point. Also I expecting focusing issues as I had with Xperia 5 due to missing TOF sensor. Finally, Pixel 5 will be cheaper anyway. Sorry
    Sony, try harder next time.

  3. I like how sony is still using the same design but keeping the same name, unlike other companys who keep the same design and give it a new name.

I also like how Sony's cameras have nice more true to life cameras unlike iphone and Google's cameras which I think are too software processed.

  4. This is the device that's going to make me go all in, and do away with my Note10+. I'm about to invest in a Sony Alpha camera, so the feature of sharing my stuff is appealing, plus I think the combination of the big battery, 120Hz screen, 240Hz touch rate and excellent cameras that shoot raw make this the phone I want in my pocket. I hope it doesn't get lost in the iPhone/Pixel noise. I have seen some complimentary reports from websites that seem to usually be less favourable to Sony so here's hopin'.

    Great vid Tom, thanks!

  5. Wireless charging very overrated, it not really wireless, you still have to put on a pad, might aswell plug the charger in. I brought a Xperia 5 a year ago for my dad, still running at full performance and battery life has remained the same, due to battery care. I would have to go for the Sony, rather then the pixel 5, if your saying it has snapdragon 765 then that's a minus. The camera controls on the Sony far superior and natural, I have a pixel 3 and Xperia 1, the pixel 3 screen is very disappointing, and so is battery life, the Photos are over processed on the pixel But are very natural on my Xperia 1 Mark 1, I went back to using the Xperia 1, the pixel is been used as extra tablet for the kids now. So if the pixel has the same flaws as my pixel 3 then I would stick with the Xperia 5 mark 2.

  6. For me, ALL depends on the initial bunch of tech review of iPhone 12 Pro. I bet that this time, with its LiDAR scanner, the iPhone 12 Pro (and Pro Max of course) will take the crown again, not only for the video, but also for still photography. This 5 mark 2 is wonderful, but I guess that the iPhone 12 Pro will shock the world with its top notch camera and image quality.
And of course the embarrassing fast A14 will crunch the 865.

  7. As someone with a visual impairment size is always a consideration for me personally but I think many people are happy with a 2k display. In all the years I've had the ability I've never used wireless charging. Plug in at night.. Job done. I have a wireless pad but it's more a novelty. I am sure there are many like me who can live without it. It sounds like a really great phone and the positives are that 120 over 60 refresh rate. Possibly brighter screen outside. Cheaper price. Oh and don't forget that extra bonus button that I hope you can set to the other camera app to make it easy to launch both. 🙂 I am curious if the 1II will record 4k at 120fps any time soon too.

  8. Looks very promising. I am one of those who is fussy about the colour. I'm currently using the Xperia 5 in grey/white. I actually turned down offers from other retailers because they only had it in black.
Great video, keep up the good work!

  9. if this phone has all of the new T Mobile's bands and comes in *red*, I will be getting it. especially if they provided a 12gb version…8 gb is already passe for a $1,000 phone.

I hope they take my advice seriously, Sony has been pointlessly half-assing their phones for far too long.

all that aside, this phone is their most exciting in at least 5 years.

  10. I think Sony kept the round design to attract female customers. I think in general female like smaller phones also, so the 5ii is feminine 😊 The 1 ii has a super cool design in my eyes, but also quite masculine…

  11. Subscribed. The reason being despite how good the sony phones have been this year there are no good reviews done by industry leading tech youtubers.. I am not a sony fan boy.. have not held a sony phone for that matter. I believe what's good should be said where due wether its sony or other brands.. and I like the show for doing that.. honestly sony has released the most feature rich phones this year. And most of there more or less no gimmicks lick big brands do to hype up their products. I think its these are the best phones for the target audience sony had in mind.. a combination of old school and futurism balanced nicely.. camera and photography acentric phones dont need bleeding bezels.. its nice to hold your phone confidently without accidental touches that way. Wireless charging is overrated.. its not efficient and very slow in most cases.. although it is changing in some of the markets. That's basically the only compromises sony did on this phones compared to current "flagships". Its not even a compromise in my book.. I just think unlike many people's beleife sony knows their audience! Only hope is thermals are managed more robustly compared to mark 1.

Edit: although it looks little outdated I honestly like the sharp rectangular design language of the the sony too.. looks classy and different in a world where every one else is busy curving screens dispite the lack of real world benefit.. kinda disappointed in that regard compared to 1 II.

  12. No wireless charging is a shame. The reason I didn't change my xz3 for the original Xperia 1 was because they removed it. So glad the 1ii brought it back!

  13. About Qi wireless charging. I have read reports that it kill the batterylife in the long run compared to normal wired charging. Generate heat that are bad for the battery etc..So I have no problem to give up that feature. Especially if I keep the device for some years.

  14. I only used wireless charging once on my phone, but as my fast charging of 40W is so much faster, I prefer to daily just put my phone 20 min in charger often before going out and have easily a day use of it. If sony implements 40W fast charging or even more Sony will be my next phone. I dont like to stick my phone in charger all the time.

  15. I think this looks like a really good phone. Doesn't it seem strange calling a 6.1" screen compact though!! 😎
I agree that wireless charging is just something that some YT reviewers say is a must. Kudos to Sony increasing the battery capacity whilst retaining a similar chassis size.

I've had 3 Xperia handsets; Z1, Z5, and XZ Premium which were all good.
I had jumped to an Oppo Find X2 Pro, as I managed to get it 2nd hand for a bit under £700 and it is very good; the screen is absolutely amazing; the camera is also very good.

  16. I will get this if the screen is a: BRIGHTER than the xperia 1 as i want to film outdoors (should be as its only HD) and if the battery lasts longer due to not having a 4k screen, if not ill just save further for the 1 mk ii
